Lawyers possess a professional responsibility to do no further harm to their clients, colleagues and witnesses. In order to do no further ham, lawyers need to understand trauma as it presents in their clients, their colleagues and themselves. Trauma informed lawyering requires the integration of empathy, humility and a commitment to connection as principles which drive their approach to practice. This session will explain what trauma informed lawyering is and why it is important. Collective care practices, self-awareness and resiliency are critical to the success of the modern lawyer. Adopting a trauma informed practice to lawyering can improve relationships, strengthen mental health and wellness, and help lawyers enjoy a long career. Trauma informed lawyers applies to all lawyers in all practice areas. Come learn why you should offer Trauma Informed Lawyering programming as an essential part of your CLE curriculum.

Myrna is a Métis lawyer from Green Lake in Treaty Six territory and the host of "The Trauma-Informed Lawyer" Podcast. Prior to founding Miyo Pimatisiwin Legal Services in 2019, Myrna served as an adjudicator in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement claims process, and Crown Prosecutor with the Ministry of the Attorney General in Saskatchewan. When she is not visiting with her three grandchildren, educating or podcasting, Myrna is advising, advocating, or conducting workplace investigations and reviews. In 2020, the Federal Department of Justice awarded Myrna their first ever Excellence in Legal Practice and Victim Support Award. She lives in North Vancouver, B.C.
